What is a refined olive oil?
A refined olive oil is one that is produced from non-edible olive oil via a series of chemical and high-temperature processes to make it fit for consumption. A refined olive oil is obtained when high free fatty acids and chemicals responsible for bad odor and flavor are removed. A refined olive oil has acidity below 1.0% and an acceptable sensory profile with a few defects.
There are two examples of refined olive oil:
- “Pure” Olive Oil – Blend of refined olive oil and virgin olive oil.
- Olive Pomace Oil – Blend of refined olive pomace oil and virgin olive oil.
