What does it mean when an extra virgin olive oil, such as KORAJE, is certified by PDO?

KORAJE is a registered entity of Sierra Magina Protected Designation of Origin. In simple words, KORAJE oils are certified by the PDO.

The Sierra Mágina Designation of Origin is a regulatory body officially recognized by the European Union (EU), which protects extra virgin olive oil made in the Sierra Mágina area, ensuring it comes from that region and meets specific quality standards set forth by the regulatory council of the PDO.

It is a public law corporation that was recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Andalusian Regional Government in November 1995. It has been recognized by the EU since 1999.

This PDO encompasses fifteen municipalities in Jaen province.

KORAJE bearing its seal and the numbered back label guarantees:

  • The oil comes from the olive groves located in the Sierra Magina territory in Jaen, Spain.
  • All steps of production, harvest, processing, and packaging/ bottling must be completed in an entity in the region that is registered to the PDO.
  • The oil is essentially of extra virgin quality, and it has successfully passed through physico-chemical and organoleptic quality control tests conducted at the laboratories of the PDO.
  • The oil is made from the Picual variety with acidity no higher than 0.5%
