What are the health benefits of olive oil?

It is not a hyperbole to say that olive oil (EVOO to be precise) is the healthiest fat. Its health benefits come from-

  1. Olive oil has monounsaturated oleic acid as the main fatty acid component. It is heart-healthy and helps prevent cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
  2. It has a very low amount of saturated, trans-, and polyunsaturated fatty acids
  3. MUFA has the highest oxidative resistance among any unsaturated oils, and it prevents the oxidation of the oil during cooking, which leads to the formation of health-harming free radicals or reactive oxygen species.
  4. Polyphenols, which are antioxidants, anti inflammatory, and anti-cancerous, etc., are exclusively present in olive oil. These bioactive compounds prevent numerous metabolic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, CVD, etc.
  5. Olive oil has other antioxidants and provitamins, such as vitamin E (tocopherols), squalene, and beta carotene, that are beneficial for health.
